Our Credit Union History

Our story is your story. Who doesn’t love a trip down memory lane?

The Story of Canvas Credit Union

Our roots run deep through Colorado history, and our dedication to helping our local communities has driven us from an eight-person employee's credit union to one of the leading financial institutions in the state. The best part? Our story becomes more and more exciting for our members every day. Here’s our shared history.

      • Public Service Employees Credit Union was established

In 1938, the world was in turmoil, uncertainty filled the air. A group of forward-thinking employees from the Public Service Company of Colorado, now Xcel Energy, took decisive action to safeguard our financial future. They banded together and filed a charter with the state as Public Service Employees Credit Union. The minimum deposit was $5 per member and initial deposits were kept in an old shoebox.

      • CU Health Sciences

CU Health Sciences joined the field of membership after a merger with Colorado Medical Credit Union.

      • Public Service Credit Union

In order to break down the perceived barrier of membership, we had our first name change. Public Service Employees Credit Union was renamed Public Service Credit Union.

      • Historic Partnership with DIA

PSCU was presented a trailblazing opportunity to provide ATM and branch services for travelers flying to, from, and through the Mile High City at Denver International Airport. With this partnership, we became the first credit union in the country to be awarded an exclusive ATM contract with a major airport.

      • Building a stronger foundation

PSCU has grown a lot over the years by joining forces with local credit unions. From 2005-2009, PSCU merged with 5 local credit unions: Veterans Administration Hospital FCU, DU Community CU, Norlarco CU, Brighton Cooperative FCU, and Provenant Federal Credit Union. To better house our growing credit union family, we relocated our Home Office to Lone Tree in 2014.

      • Canvas Credit Union

The name Public Service said a lot about us, it just didn’t say enough. It didn’t express our warmth, our quirks, or our personal dedication to standing shoulder to shoulder with each of our members. In 2018, we became Canvas Credit Union. It represents the fabric of our lives, the spread of our communities, and it’s the canvas on which we create the future of our families and those we love.
